The Financial Information Forum is developing a non-proprietary benchmark that can be used as an alternative to the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Dow Jones plans to begin charging $1 per user for real-time access, and 25 cents per user for continuous delayed access to the DJIA as of April 1. Dow Jones' plan to charge for the data has outraged users, who believe the information is part of the public domain (IMD, Oct. 20, 1997).
