Dark pools: What lies beneath?

Done right, new regulations could make it easier for investment and hedge fund managers to navigate alternative execution venues through more uniform volume reporting rules, while a heavy-handed regulatory approach could conversely damage the very value proposition dark pools bring to the buy-side trader.

The possibility of greater regulatory involvement in dark pools was most recently raised by SEC chairwoman Mary Schapiro. Speaking at a financial industry gathering in June, Schapiro cited
