APAM Buys A Cray Computer To Aid In Price Calculation, Bond Portfolio Optimization


Atlantic Portfolio Analytics & Management Inc. (APAM) has acquired a Cray Research Corp. EL98 supercomputer and is currently installing the machine at its offices in Orlando, Fla. The firm, which manages $3 billion in fixed-income securities and derivative instruments, has been using Cray supercomputers on a time-share basis for the past two years.

APAM appears to be the first buy-side organization to take the plunge on buying a supercomputer. Its purchase follows the recent acquisition by
