AI governance rules coming soon, says CFTC chair

Selig doesn’t want to stifle innovation, but says trading or advice algos will need guardrails.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission may write new rules to govern the use of artificial intelligence as the technology moves into higher-risk deployments such as trading and financial advice, CFTC chairman Michael Selig has indicated.

Selig said his agency is already meeting with firms looking to embed AI models into trading advisory software and exchange functionality, expecting a wave of tools that let people develop trading strategies and seek financial advice through chat interfaces.
