Two of the buzziest of buzzwords buzzing around these days are middleware and straight through processing. But, as with many buzzwords, they begin to lose their meaning over time, as definitions become more lax, and those claiming to be leaders in the field multiply.

Considering the meaning of these two phrases last week, I was forced to wonder if they had in fact become meaningless. In the early days, mention of the term middleware generated much excitement among techie types. It was the new
