Bracing for Basel

CSFB and DZ Bank have known all along that the European Union (EU) would be adopting Basel II more or less in full. Basel II is not mandatory, however, and national regulators are free to apply it as they see fit. While most regulators elsewhere in the world are following in the EU's footsteps, the U.S. Federal Reserve has indicated that it will expect only the top 11 US banks to comply. It also anticipates that another 10 or so will opt in.
