Global Exchanges Withstand Market Slide

On Jan. 21, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) erroneously halted trading for three minutes. BSE stopped trading at 2:49 p.m. local time and resumed at 2:52 p.m.

The stoppage was a mistake and occurred because the exchange didn't program its systems to meet new trade halt rules, says Kalyan Bose, head of corporate affairs at BSE. The exchange readjusts trade halt guidelines at the end of every quarter. According to the current quarter's guidelines, the market ceases trading when the benchmark
