The small number of national exchanges that have dominated equity trading for so long are slowly losing their monopolistic grip on the markets in the wake of the EU's Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID), in force since Nov. 1, 2007. MiFID allows for the creation of multilateral trading facilities (MTFs) that many predicted would fragment liquidity in Europe, much like it is now in the US. That process has now begun
