Merrill Lynch, CNBC Buy A Piece Of Archipelago

NEW YORK--In a series of moves that might have made Monte "Let's Make A Deal" Hall blush, Archipelago sold a 14.3 percent stake to Merrill Lynch on September 9 and a week later announced that CNBC purchased a 12.4% stake in the Chicago-based ECN.

Both transactions come less than two months after Instinet, the Reuters ECN, bought a 16.4 percent share.

Merrill's dominant position in the investment banking and brokerage businesses are well-advertised, but it has been threatened by electronic trading
