Hewlett-Packard Aims High With Low-Cost Risc Stations

When Hewlett-Packard Co. unveiled its newest Apollo Series 700 workstations before an audience of Wall Street systems executives in New York two weeks ago, it did so with the aid of charts comparing the new low-cost workstations to Sun Microsystems Inc.'s SPARCstation IPXs. Citing such benchmarks as price/performance, HP presenters were quick to point out that the 35 MIPS, $4,990 workstation bangs plenty for the buck.

With the two new entries -- the Series 700 Model 705 with 35 megahertz RISC
