Suddenly, it has all become clear to me: IT backbones based upon standards are the way to go. No more will we resort to rigid, proprietary super-complex, expensive infrastructures that become far more entrenched than the applications, operating systems and hardware that they are supposed to bring together. With apologies to Sun Microsystems, I feel a new tagline coming on: "The backbone is the computer."
