I want to make our non-British readers aware of the origins of a particular slang term used a lot at this stage of the soccer football season: “Bottle it.” 

In Cockney rhyming slang, “bottle” means “arse” (bottle and glass). Originally, you would “lose your bottle,” i.e., be so scared as to lose control of your bowel function.

To “bottle it” now mainly means to crack under pressure, and it’s pretty much exclusively applied to whichever team at the top of the league loses some games, drops some
