Plugging the Fee Leak

Like other front-, middle- and back-office components, fee structures at buy-side firms—in place essentially to make sure clients are billed accurately—have grown more complex over the past decade. Unlike in other areas, however, managers’ technology has not kept pace with those structures’ increasing sophistication. That technological disconnect has proven costly, but prior to the credit crisis managers appeared able to bear those expenses.

Research issued by TowerGroup in 2008 showed that
