The Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (Mifid) came into force in November 2007 at a time of “lighter-touch” approaches by market regulators, when the idea of principles-based regulation seemed to be more appropriate and of-its-time. Back then, many financial institutions said that even this kind of light-touch, principles-based regulation was unnecessary as they already had everything under control, while many other institutions said that only regulation that was much more detailed
