The vendor began using "spider" programs to collect data from the Web around four years ago, based on "white lists" of sites that its top clients considered valuable investment resources, and two years ago created a core list of overlapping sources shared by a few of the vendor's biggest clients, which it provided as part of a standard package along with custom packages of other sites specific to different clients.
