There exists a paradox between the desired search for simplicity and transparency in regulation and the incredible complexity of financial systems, financial institutions and the data and systems that permit the financial system to function. Absent radical suggestions for breaking financial institutions into far smaller component parts, there is clearly ‘no turning back’ to the days of simpler transactions and simpler rules in a world that trades globally on a 24/7 clock.
