Salomon Smith Barney (SSB) expects its new fixed income trading room to last five to ten years--pretty high expectations given the pace of change in this market. But SSB officials are confident that the floor will go the distance.

After all, they work closely with the firm's key technology vendors, doing extensive capacity planning, overbuilding the network and modularly fitting the room itself--trying to cover all the bases.
